Barrel House hosting a special edition of Wu Tang Wednesday to help tornado survivors find ‘a little normalcy’

This won’t be your typical Wednesday at the Barrel House, however.

The taproom will not be offering its usual flights, or deals on growlers. Their retail register will be closed and they will only be handling transactions at their bar, although you still will be able to purchase beer and wine to go, if you so choose.

Due to the water outages and conservation efforts, The Barrel House is asking its customers to use discretion when using the bathroom.

But what the Barrel House will have is free bottles of water for drinking, 20 beers on tap (that will be served out of plastic cups, rather than glasses), outlets to charge your phones, and those Wu-Tang Clan jams.

The taproom will also be offering free sandwiches while supplies last.

The tradition began in December 2017, shortly after new owners Gus and Sara Stathes took over, and they’ve been held each Wednesday since.

You’ll probably want to keep the kids away from Barrel House though.

A tongue-in-cheek note posted on the business' Facebook page explained the weekly "Wu-Tang Wednesday."

The late Ol’ Dirty Bastard was a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group. His song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” includes the lyric “yeah baby, I like it raw.”

Gus Stathes, who co-owns the bar with partner Sara Levin, said it is about fun.

“Sara and I have been wanting to do something to liven up Wednesdays around the shop, as they’re a notoriously slow day across the board in the industry,” he explained in a Facebook message. “We’re hip hop fans, I’m a Wu-Tang fanatic, and ‘Wu-Tang Wednesday’ just rolls off the tongue too well. My buddy Jon Albrecht came up with the “growler growler fills y’all” tag, and thus a weekly event was born.”

He said the tagline is a nod to the Wu-Tang song "C.R.E.A.M.": "Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M - get the money. Dolla dolla bill y'all."

“Wu-Tang Wednesday seems to be the tightest fit, though we play all manner of hip-hop, not just the boom bap NYC stuff,” Stathes said.
